Since Valentine's Day is in 3 days and I am assuming no one sells candy canes any more, you can always put this post away in your favorites to make next year with your kids. These, Kylie and I made for her school class to hand out.
First, preheat your oven to 300 deg., then get a baking sheet and use a sil mat, if you don't have one, use parchment paper, DO NOT use wax paper. I tried the first batch with wax paper and the candy cane hearts stuck to the paper. I had a terrible time peeling apart the two, so ended up throwing them away.
Very time consuming, but must be done. Remove the wrappers from the candy canes and place 2 candy canes facing each other on the sil mat to form a heart. Fit however many you can on a mat, not to overcrowd.
Then insert in the oven for about 5 minutes, though you may want to watch as every oven cooks differently.
Once the candy cane hearts are cooked, remove from the oven and insert lollypop sticks (which can be purchased at your local craft or party warehouse store), in to each candy cane heart. You may want to pinch the ends to the stick, though watch out, it is VERY HOT. I ended up learning to place the stick in the candy cane then spinning it to form the candy over the stick, and it worked great!
Once cooled, I wrapped each one in plastic. I had to run to JoAnn's Fabric Store to purchase red ribbon, which I tied each one, than had a white sticker and wrote Kylie's name on it, which was placed in the middle of the heart.
So, from our family to yours, Happy Valentine's Day!
